2. What programs are offered?
F&L offers classes in GED preparation, Citizenship preparation, Parenting, English as a Second Language, Personal Financial Literacy, and Adult Basic Education, as well as assisting with the Texas Education Agency's registration for the GED test.
3. Who are F & L's Students?
• High School drop outs over age 17.
• Working Adults in the 5 county area who do not have a high school diploma.
• Adults who need to "brush up" on their education in order to qualify for college or advanced certification/licensing programs. Many of these adults work in our local medical and health care fields.
• Parents who are divorcing.
• Parents and Grandparents who want to learn more about how to rear responsible and resilient children.
• Mothers and fathers of children in our schools, whose home language is not English. These include adults from nations such as Sierra Leone, Russia, Ukraine, Myanmar, Viet Nam, Mexico, Brazil, Guatemala, India, El Salvador.
4. What difference does Literacy make to Kerr County?
Research demonstrates the direct correlation between education and economic growth, and between illiteracy and poverty. Skills of the local workforce are one of the attractions for industry or employers to locate in the Kerr County area. A literate population means less welfare and a more productive citizenry. Literate parents make better parents and their children have a better chance to break the cycle of poverty.
