KERRVILLE, TX

OUR VISION:

A Community whose residents are literate, responsible and productive.

Illiteracy is a factor of.......

HOMELESSNESS

DOMESTIC ABUSE

POVERTY

LACK OF HEALTHCARE

CRIME

19% of Kerr County residents, 25 years old and over, did not graduate from high

school or earn an equivalency—and that doesn’t count younger dropouts!

18% of our county’s population five years and older speak some language

other than English at home.

13% of our county live below the poverty level.

These statistics are alarming!

An individual’s ability to read, write, and speak proficiently in English, and to

understand and solve problems, directly affects his or her ability to function on

the job, in the family, and in society.

Thanks to past generous community support—and the support of our dedicated volunteers—we have a long history of enabling over 500 Hill Country adults each year... and we are passionate to do even more!

ABOUT US

Would you like to support students at Families & Literacy?

Four F&L students and their instructor, Maureen O'Rourke, display a contribution check from Bank of the Hills.

O'Rourke's Level 4 Conversational English class members are a close-knit group who have progressed through several semesters of ESL (English as a Second Language) classes at Families & Literacy.  From left are Leticia Ceballos, instructor O'Rourke, Martha Warner, Albina Callcott, Olena Eddy, and Executive Director Mike Hunter.  Leticia and Martha's first language is Spanish.  Albina and Olena are from the former Soviet Union.

O'Rourke's class meets for two hours two mornings a week.  Many F&L classes are offered at night.  Highly motivated, these students plan to transition into F&L's  Adult Education Courses in preparation for obtaining the GED certificate.

A contribution of $2,000 would support the annual educational costs for four such students at Families & Literacy.

Families & Literacy student Rameshwar Singh and Executive Director Mike Hunter display a Bank of the Hills donation to F&L.

"Ram" Singh is a continuing student in Jody McCulley's Level 2 ESL (English as a Second Language) class.  Ram's native language is Hindi, the national language of India.

A college graduate, Ram is from the northeastern state of Bihar, which borders Nepal and Bangladesh.

Ram's class meets two nights a week in classrooms at the Greater Kerrville Alamo College Center.  Thanks to Alamo Colleges for partnering with F&L to improve the lives of residents in our community.
